Meant to symbolize bronze weapons, the jade daggers and axes are purely ceremonial. The pictured work is expertly carved from a very fine, multicolored nephrite. The stone is thin and tapers down to a fine edge from the inside out forming a double edged blade. The haft is squared and the blade comes up to a fine point. Similar examples have been found throughout Shang burial sites, including Jinsha and Anyang.
